In a stunning move, the New York Yankees acquired longtime Seattle Mariner Ichiro Suzuki for two players. The trade became official at 6:30 PM just before the Yankees series against the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field. The Yankees sent pitchers D.J. Mitchell and Danny Farquhar to the Mariners and the Yankees have agreed to pay just over $2 million of Ichiro's salary. Ichiro will become a free agent at the conclusion of this season. The Yankees' Brett Gardner is expected to be out for the season, so another outfielder was needed for the Bronx Bombers. Ichiro is having a down year by his standards with an .642 OPS and hitting .261 and an OBP of .288. Ichiro has 2,533 career hits, all with the Mariners, and owns the single season record for hits with 262 back in 2004. No word on whether Ichiro will suit up for the Yankees tonight against the Seattle Mariners.
