San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for failing a drug test.
ESPN's Jorge Arangure has reported, via Twitter, that the Giants slugger has tested positive for testosterone and will be suspended 50 games, effectively ending his 2012 season. MLB has confirmed the failed test and suspension.
Cabrera was having a career season with the Giants, hitting .346 with 11 home runs and was named the All-Star Game MVP in his first All-Star Game.
The Giants and Cabrera recently put talks of a contract extension on hold. Cabrera is scheduled to become a free agent at the conclusion of this year.
