Former Minnesota Viking running back Michael Bennett has plead guilty in Florida after participating in a tax refund and identity theft scheme.

Last week, Bennett plead guilty to one count of wire fraud in Florida. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors are seeking less than the possible 20 year sentence that Bennett was facing.

The FBI operated an undercover check-cashing store in North Miami that was used by a group of eight people that included Bennett. The group cashed checks at the store from February to April and cashed about $500,000 in fake refund checks.

Bennett was drafted by the Vikings in the first round in 2001 and became a starter right away after the retirement of Robert Smith, but he never became the player the Vikings had hoped for due to injury and fumbling problems.

Bennett also played for the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, and more recently, the Oakland Raiders in 2010.
