Gold Medal Favorite Spain Will Not Advance After Shocking Loss
Spain, the favorites to win the gold medal in soccer, will not advance to the next round after a very shocking 1-0 to Honduras.
The Spanish hit the post three times in a game where the Spaniards dominated the Hondurans.
Jerry Bengston's header in the first half was all the Hondurans needed to pull off the major upset. Roger Espinoza delivered a beautiful cross to Bengston who then put it in the net past David de Gea for an early 1-0 lead.
Spain started off as they normally do, attacking, but the Hondurans defense held up just enough. Also, a little bit of luck helped, too.
Adrian Lopez, Iker Munian, and Rodrigo all hit the post, but just couldn't get it in. Spain was playing without Inigo Martinez after he received a red card in the Olympic opener against Japan.
Honduras now sits in second in Group D two points behind the leader, Japan.
