Upton Brothers Hit 100th Career Home Run on the Same Night
The Upton brothers, B.J. and Justin, have a lot in common in terms of their baseball careers. Both are first round draft picks, both are members of the 20/20 club, and now they have another thing in common and its a pretty unreal thing.
Both B.J. and Justin hit their 100th career home runs on Friday night within an hour of each other.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this is the first time in history that a pair of brothers hit their 100th career home run on the same day.
Younger brother Justin hit his 100th first with a second inning solo homer against the Philadelphia Phillies and then B.J. hit his a short time later at home against their division rival Baltimore Orioles.
In fact, in another weird occurrence, the Upton brothers hit their 99th career home run on the same night back on July 20.
They become only the sixth pair of brothers to hit at least 100 career home runs joining Joe and Vince DiMaggio, Clete and Ken Boyer, Aaron and Bret Boone, Sandy and Roberto Alomar, and Irish and Bob Meusel.
B.J. joined some elite company with his home run. He became only the eighth player in history in hit 100 home runs and steal 200 bases before his 28th birthday. The others on the list are Rickey Henderson, Cesar CedeƱo, Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonds, Eric Davis, Lloyd Moseby and Hanley Ramirez.
B.J. said of joining the elite group, "Anytime you can be in the same sentence with any of those guys, it's always an honor,"
B.J. continued, "I'm glad I was in a position to be able to do that; Rickey Henderson was definitely one of the guys I looked up to growing up watching baseball. To even be mentioned with that caliber of players, especially with their track records, it's definitely a good thing."
He said after the Rays win over the Orioles that he went to text his younger brother about his feat when Justin told him that he got it first.
"I was just texting him," B.J. said, "He said he got his before mine, but it's all good. It was cool to do that on the same day."
Justin's Diamondbacks beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 and after the game said, "It was cool. I'm happy for him. It's a big night for the family."
The bar has certainly been raised for the Upton brothers and now we wait to see what they will do for an encore.
