Philip Rivers' abysmal performance on Monday Night Football cost his team the win and gave the red hot Chiefs a share of the AFC West lead. Rivers threw two interceptions, now a league leading 11 interceptions, zero touchdowns, and one very costly fumble. With the Chargers in range for a game ending field goal, Rivers fumbled the snap from center Nick Hardwick that the Chiefs recovered in an improbable turn of events. The Chiefs then forced overtime and won the game with a Ryan Succop field goal.

Philip Rivers is continuing to drag the Chargers team down. The Chargers should have won last week and again should have won last night, but alas Rivers turnovers late in the game caused a Chargers loss in both games. One has to wonder if Philip Rivers has a case of the yips. Looking at Rivers' play and body language last night, it appears as if Rivers' has lost all confidence in himself and needs to regain it soon or the Chargers are headed for a tailspin. ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer has said his costly fumble will haunt him still ten years from now and will continue to chase demons. Quarterbacks are headcases and if they let things haunt them and keep thinking about the past then they will continue to play poorly. Rivers needs to get better and play smarter. Things won't get better next week when they face the 7-0 Green Bay Packers.

With Rivers' and the Chargers poor play, head coach Norv Turner could find himself out of a job. Turner has had many chances with this club and it appears as if time is running out. You can't put all the blame on Turner however, some of the blame belongs to Philip Rivers. Not only is Rivers' recent poor play costing his team, but it could be costing his head coach his job.

Another question is, "Is Philip Rivers an elite quarterback?" Rivers has a ton of talent, true, but he seems like he doesn't play up to his potential. Rivers, in my opinion, will never be among the elite like Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, etc. Rivers still has time to turn this ship around, but how many opportunities will he get? The Chargers every year are picked as a sleeper team, but disappoint a legion of Charger fans everywhere. You can compare it to Peyton Manning in the way that Peyton never won in the postseason after winning a ton in the regular season. Manning eventually figured out how to win in the playoffs and won the Super Bowl. Rivers, on the other hand, can't win in the REGULAR SEASON, so how can he win in the playoffs.

In four playoff appearances, Rivers has only made it to the AFC Championship once and has a record of 3-4. This was when the Chargers continually had one of the best defenses in football, and in a league where defenses win championships, the blame falls squarely on the offense. The Chargers had both LaDanian Tomlinson and Shawne Merriman in their prime and yet failed to win a Super Bowl, or even make it to one. The Chargers are nowhere near talented as they were three, four years ago. I don't see the Chargers as a contender anytime soon.
