Report: 76ers expected to make nine-time All-Star their 'top target' if he declines player option

With only Joel Embiid and Paul Reed under contract for the 2024-25 season, the Sixers are projected to have more than $60 million in cap space this summer.

According to Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer, Clippers All-Star forward Paul George will be among the star players the Sixers will target with their cap space.

"Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George is expected to be their top target if declines his $48.8 million player option with L.A. for next season," Pompey wrote in his latest mailbag.

Could the rest of the East be forced to deal with a Big Three of George, Embiid and Tyrese Maxey (if Sixers extend him) next season?

From a basketball perspective, George would be a seamless fit in Philadelphia. Due to his ability to thrive off the ball, George's skill set perfectly complements the two-man game of Embiid and Maxey. Furthermore, George's versatility as a defender would be a welcome addition to coach Nick Nurse's defensive scheme, which involves a lot of switching.

Many insiders believe George's long-term future in Los Angeles hinges on the upcoming postseason. If the Clippers make a deep postseason run, it's almost a given that the Palmdale native would stay put in his hometown team. However, if the Clippers are sent home early, all bets are off.

George is averaging 22.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists this season. The two-way wing is the healthiest he's been in years, appearing in over 70 games for the first time since the 2018-19 season.
