Eliot Wolf reveals real reason the Patriots drafted Tennessee QB Joe Milton III
Randy Sartin-USA TODAY Sports

When the New England Patriots were on the clock with the 193rd overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, they had a decision to make.

Having already selected UNC quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick, the Patriots were looking to build up their offensive around him. However, there was another quarterback on the board that the Patriots took a serious look at.

And in the end, they just couldn't say no.

“It was just one of those picks where there was too much talent in him to pass that up,” Wolf said on the Adam Schefter podcast. “I had the opportunity to watch Joe play live, the last game of the year against Vanderbilt. I got there really early and watched him warm up. Just watching him throw the football is unbelievable,” Wolf said.

“He’s 6-5, 245 pounds. He’s got a rocket for an arm. He’s athletic. He played in (Tennessee head coach Josh) Heupel’s offense there. It’s not an NFL offense, but we feel like there’s some things that we can work with and develop,” Wolf added.

The Patriots waived Nathan Rourke earlier this week, leaving Maye, Milton, Jacoby Brissett, and Bailey Zappe as the only quarterbacks on the roster.

But as for Maye and Milton, those are two players with strong arms. And Maye admitted that he's up for a throwing contest.

"Joe can throw it now, Joe can throw it," Maye said on 98.5 The Sports Hub. "Hey, I ain't going to turn it down, now. I ain't going to turn it down."

The first time we will get to see these new two quarterback's in action is on Saturday during rookie minicamp. So let's see who can "throw it" better.
